Dr. Rita B. Domingues is a researcher and invited professor at the University of Algarve since 2018.

She has been teaching multiple courses focused on marine microbiology, microbial ecology, and biological oceanography, and leads the Marine Microbiology Lab at Centre for Marine and Environmental Research at the University of Algarve.

Her research interests focus on phytoplankton ecology, eutrophication, and harmful algal blooms in coastal ecosystems. Some of her most important contributions include “Phytoplankton composition, growth and production in the Guadiana estuary (SW Iberia): unraveling changes induced after dam construction” and “Co-limitation of phytoplankton by N and P in a shallow coastal lagoon: implications for eutrophication evaluation”. She is also trained in psychology and has conducted research on risk perception of coastal hazards.

EXPLORING ONLINE OCEAN DATA AND RESOURCES

Dr. Lilian Krug is the Scientific Coordinator for the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) and a collaborator researcher at the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research at the University of Algarve since 2019.

She has been teaching short courses focused on ocean data management, and online ocean data and resources for marine ecosystem analyses for international graduate students and early career researchers since 2012. At POGO, Dr Krug activities aim at the promotion of a truly global ocean observation system that serves science and society. This includes promoting capacity development, innovation in ocean observing, outreach, and advocacy.

Her research experience encompasses application of satellite and model data in coastal and oceanographic studies, with an emphasis on spatio-temporal analysis of ocean-atmosphere interaction and climate variability, as well as their impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems, and primary productivity. Some of her most important contributions include “Ocean surface partitioning strategies using Ocean Colour Remote Sensing: a review“ and “Patterns and drivers of phytoplankton phenology off SW Iberia: a phenoregion based perspective”.

ANA B. BARBOSA

EXPLORING ONLINE OCEAN DATA AND RESOURCES

Dr. Ana Barbosa is currently assistant professor at the University of Algarve, where she has been lecturing since 1991, and researcher at the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research.

She has been teaching multiple courses focused on biological oceanography and marine ecosystems, and her research interests focus on dynamics, regulation and trophic role of planktonic microbes, and impacts of environmental change in marine ecosystems.

Some of her most important contributions include ‘Variability patterns and phenology of harmful phytoplankton blooms off southern Portugal: looking for region-specific environmental drivers and predictors’ and ‘Unravelling region-specific environmental drivers of phytoplankton across a complex marine domain (off SW Iberia)’. Currently, she participates in a series of projects including ‘São Tomé and Príncipe little fish threatened – a big opportunity to unravel this fishery resource in tropical islands’ and ‘SEA-EU – European University of the Seas’.

JORGE SANTOS

REMOTE INTERNSHIPS

Dr. Jorge Santos is professor of fishery ecology at the Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics of the UiT- The Arctic University of Norway where he has been employed since 1996. He also has professional experience as environmental and fisheries advisor from Norway and overseas in the private sector and government administration.

He has been leading and teaching multiple subjects on biology, management, research methods and research practice at graduate levels. He has also been the academic coordinator of a master’s degree on International Fishery Management at UiT.

His research interests are varied and include fisheries ecology and bio-geography, coastal ecology, fisheries management, small-scale fisheries, coastal culture and modern technologies. He coordinates graduate school projects taking place in Africa and Asia, and is the focal point in Norway for Blue Route.

Dr.  Manuel Célio Conceição is a professor at   University of Algarve since 1992.

He has been teaching multiple courses focused on language sciences , terminology and language policies, and multilingualism and science communication and leads the Research Group Science Communication and Cultures: multilingualism and mediation  at CIAC  – Research Centre in Arts and Communication – University of Algarve.

His research interests focus on language, knowledge and science communication, and terminology and languages policies. Some of his most important contributions include Higher Education language policies for mobility and inclusion and Language policies and internationalisation of Higher Education. Currently, he leads and /or participates in a series of projects including APATCHE and SEA EU aiming at enhancing the plurilingual approach in higher education  and creating science communication guidelines  for the European University of the Seas respectively.

Ravi Araujo

Ravi Araujo has a degree in Biology from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil and a Master degree in Marine Biology from the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal. He is currently a PhD student in University of Cádiz, Spain engaged in research in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS).

He has vast experience in the cultivation of marine organisms either in fiberglass tanks or earthen ponds. With a focus on welfare, physiology and nutrition of marine fish. He is responsible for the maintenance and management of the oxygen monitoring equipment of the Aquaculture Research Station in Olhão (Sinergia®).

He has been a technician at IPMA – Portuguese Institute for the Ocean and Atmosphere since 2013. Currently he has dedicated himself to learning about RAS.

Rui is Veterinary doctor at S2AQUAcoLAB and expert in fish pathology.

Rui worked since 2013 with several animal production companies, focusing on prevention and minimizing the application of antimicrobials. Conducted a Master on Aquaculture at University of Algarve, focusing on in vitro inactivation of the parasite Amyloodinium ocellatum. Currently doing a PhD in Aquaculture with special interest in developing of early diagnostics methodologies, developing new treatments and vaccines for fish parasites.  Has been working since 2021 in collaboration with EPPO-IPMA and S2AQUAcoLAB in providing fish pathology services for marine aquaculture.

HUGO QUENTAL FERREIRA

Hugo Quental Ferreira, born in 1982, master in Aquaculture in 2017 and graduated in Marine Biology and Biotechnology in 2006, both from the School of Sea Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. Since March 2007 he has been a research fellow at the Olhão Fish Farming Pilot Station (EPPO) of IPMA (Portuguese Institute for Sea and the Atmosphere), under the European projects SEACASE (2007-2010), SEAFARE (2010-2015), IMTA-EFFECT (2016-2017) and national projects AQUAENERG (2015-2016) and DIVERSIAQUA (2015, 2017 to the present). Since 2012 he is the direct responsible for the growout area of EPPO in earth ponds and its the water pumping system and laboratory associated. He aquired scientific, technical, and communicational skills by managing 17 earth ponds for scientific trials of marine fish species like Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), european seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), meagre (Argyrosomus regius), senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis), White seabream (Diplodus sargus), Two banded seabream (Diplodus cervinus), dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus), flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus), Sea cucumber (Holothuria forskali), Pacific and Portuguese oysters ( Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata), and seaweeds (Ulva spp). He has acquired knowledge in environmental accounting (EMERGY analysis) and Life Cycle Assessment under the IMTA-EFFECT project. His main expertise is the combination between water quality and integrated multi-trophic culture of fish and oysters and the management of marine fish culture in earth ponds.

Dr. Ana Candeias-Mendes is a biologist, Master in Marine Biology , with more than 25 years of experience in Marine Aquaculture hatchery working at IPMA – Portuguese Institute for the Ocean and Atmosphere.

Capture, transport and adaptation to captivity of several marine fish breeders. Broodstock management, spawning induction, eggs eclosion, larval rearing, production and fattening of juveniles of the marine fish species produced at EPPO and more recently Seriola rivoliana and also echinoderms working with sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus. Maintenance of tanks, equipment, water circuits. Elaboration of new tanks circuit for trials and production. Collection and processing of biological samplings on fieldwork and laboratorial in support to production. Transport of live fish. Capture of wild breeders and expedition of broodstock to other facilities or restocking to the wild as in case of the threatened grouper Epinephelus marginatus. Monitoring of trials with juveniles in oceanic cages.

CARLOS A. P. ANDRADE

Carlos Andrade is a Principal Researcher at ARDITI – Agência Regional para o Desenvolvimento da Investigação Tecnologia e Inovação, Madeira, Portugal, and a member of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre/ARNET—Aquatic Research Network.  He holds an M.Sc. degree in Aquatic Resource Management from the King´s College, University of London (1988), and a Ph.D. in Marine Biology and Aquaculture from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (2012).

He has considerable experience in training courses for Aquaculture and has supervised various MSc and PhD thesis.

His sound training and experience in all major taxonomic groups used in aquaculture and his aquatic resource planning background took him to participate in technical commissions for coastal zone management plans and marine aquaculture development plans. He has been coordinator and PI of European-funded research and technical development projects with  industrial partners, involving new aquaculture species, sustainable production systems, and integration of aquaculture facilities with other marine space users. His present research interests lie in the development of methods and technologies for the sustainable production of low-trophic aquatic species both in laboratories and at large oceanic farming facilities. Also of his interest is the evaluation of alternative sustainable feed and compound feed ingredients as part of the circular economy goal.

IRIS SILVA
IRIS SILVA

Iris is an Assistant Researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB and expert in Molecular Biology and Genetics. She completed her PhD (2015) in Biomedical Sciences in the University of Algarve in collaboration with the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec, Canada. Then she worked for 5 years in BioISI (University of Lisbon, Portugal) as a post-doc where she developed innovative in vitro models, such as intestinal organoids, and worked in personalized medicine. She gained experience over the years in different molecular areas such as confocal microscopy, electrophysiology, gene expression, development of biobanks and isolation, culture and characterization of primary cells from different tissues. During her scientific career, she has published 13 articles as first author and 20 as co-author. The outcome of her scientific productivity led to more than 470 citations, resulting in a h-index of 13. She is the recipient of several international awards, namely “Best Young Investigator Award” twice, in 2018 and in 2021, by the ECFS, and the Alumni Career Award by the University of Algarve in 2023. She taught for two years the course “Cell culture” in the Biomedical Sciences bachelor in the University of Algarve, Portugal, and for one year she was assistant professor of “Physiology” in the University of Lisbon, Portugal, for the Biochemistry bachelor. Now she works in S2AQUAcoLAB, and she is the responsible for the genetic and molecular tests performed at S2AQUAcoLAB, promoting a connection between Molecular Biology and Aquaculture.

Dr. Cátia Marques is a Researcher at IPMA – Portuguese Institute for the Ocean and Atmosphere – since 2015 and Scientific Coordinator at the S2AQUAcoLAB – Collaborative Laboratory for Sustainable and Smart Aquaculture .

Cátia Lourenço Marques is a biochemist and holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences with specialization in cellular and molecular biology. She is a researcher at the Aquaculture Research Station (EPPO) from the Portuguese Institute for the Ocean and Atmosphere (IPMA) where is responsible for the molecular biology laboratory and since 2021 perform functions of Scientific Coordinator at the S2AQUAcoLAB, a collaborative laboratory for a Sustainable and Smart Aquaculture. Has more than 15 years of laboratory experience on the Life Sciences and Aquaculture fields, with particular emphasis on molecular methodologies applied to aquaculture (e.g. pathogen identification, gene expression of biomarkers for growth and stress response). Cátia is part of the scientific team of several national and international projects and is co-author on various technical and scientific publication within the aquaculture field. She has participated in the supervision of numerous undergraduate, master and PhD students and has been involved in the organization and promotion of scientific dissemination activities to stakeholders and general public.

Dr. Florbela Soares is a Senior Researcher at IPMA – Portuguese Institute for the Ocean and Atmosphere – since 2009.

She has been teaching in several courses focused on Marine Aquaculture, Fish Diseases, and Animal Welfare and leads the Laboratory of Marine Fish Pathologies at  EPPO/IPMA- Aquaculture Research Station and S2AQUA Colab.

Her research interests focus on Marine Fish Diseases diagnosis, Fish welfare, Fish Hematology, and immunology. Some of hers most important contributions include, Cytotoxic and Hemolytic Activities of Extracts of the Fish Parasite Dinoflagellate Amyloodinium ocellatum and Stress effects of amyloodiniosis in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata).  Currently, she leads several projects  including SAUDE&AQUA and VERTICAL ALGAS-PRR aiming (Fish pathologies diagnosis and the study of life cycle and mitigation measures of marine fish ectoparasites, such as Amyloodinium and Monogenea. Also the development of new products or tools for mitigation the pathogens occurrence in marine fish) and (Mitigation of Monogenea eggs occurrence  with the use of macroalgae extracts), respectively. Participation in the project BIOBANCOS-PRR  that aims to maintain and characterize pathogens like marine fish bacteria and parasites.

Dr. Teresa Baptista is a professor at Polytechnic of Leiria since 2007.

She has been teaching multiple courses focused on Aquaculture, Fish Diseases, and Animal Welfare and leads the Aquatic Animal Facility at MARE – Polytechnic of Leiria.

Hers research interests focus on Fish Diseases, Fish Pathology, and Fish immunology. Some of hers most important contributions include Early Immune Modulation in European Seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Juveniles in Response to Betanodavirus Infection and Modulatory effect of Gracilaria gracilis on European seabass gut microbiota community and its  functionality. Currently, she leads in a series of projects including Be4AquaHealth and participates in Cure4Aqua aiming  (Pathologies of farmed fish in Portugal.  Molecular biology tools to detect and health biomarkers) and [prevent diseases in farmed fish and improve fish health stress and welfare], respectively.

Pedro Pousão-Ferreira

Pedro Pousão-Ferreira is a biologist, senior researcher and expertise in aquaculture in IPMA. He is responsible for the Aquaculture Research Station in Olhão. He has more than 35 years’ experience on the reproduction (hatchery), larval rearing, nutrition, ongrowing and production of bass, sole, meagre, grouper and 6 species of breams on in-shore (earth ponds) and on offshore (cages). He has participated in 88 national and international research projects. Member of Scientific Review Panel of Agência Nacional de Inovação (ANI) and Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). Member of External Scientific Review Panel (ESRP) of AKDN (Aga Khan foundation).

He has 180 papers in international scientific periodicals with referees, 27 peer-reviewed short papers, 419 communication/posters in scientific meetings and workshops, 4 manuals, 6 book chapters and 1 technical book. Is also Professor of Aquaculture at the University of Porto  (ICBAS) since 2000 and was Professor of marine larviculture and aquaculture at the University of Algarve (2011-2013). Presently is also President of the Scientific Council of IPMA.
