SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTU
Iris is an Assistant Researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB and expert in Molecular Biology and Genetics. She completed her PhD (2015) in Biomedical Sciences in the University of Algarve in collaboration with the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec, Canada. Then she worked for 5 years in BioISI (University of Lisbon, Portugal) as a post-doc where she developed innovative in vitro models, such as intestinal organoids, and worked in personalized medicine. She gained experience over the years in different molecular areas such as confocal microscopy, electrophysiology, gene expression, development of biobanks and isolation, culture and characterization of primary cells from different tissues. During her scientific career, she has published 13 articles as first author and 20 as co-author. The outcome of her scientific productivity led to more than 470 citations, resulting in a h-index of 13. She is the recipient of several international awards, namely “Best Young Investigator Award” twice, in 2018 and in 2021, by the ECFS, and the Alumni Career Award by the University of Algarve in 2023. She taught for two years the course “Cell culture” in the Biomedical Sciences bachelor in the University of Algarve, Portugal, and for one year she was assistant professor of “Physiology” in the University of Lisbon, Portugal, for the Biochemistry bachelor. Now she works in S2AQUAcoLAB, and she is the responsible for the genetic and molecular tests performed at S2AQUAcoLAB, promoting a connection between Molecular Biology and Aquaculture.
